Prof. Ivan Obolenskyi was a famous scientist, physician, public figure, founder and head of the Department of General Pathology (Pathological Physiology) in 1871-1886, the first head of the hospital therapeutic clinic, professor and director of the faculty therapeutic clinic of Kharkiv University.
He focused on the study of disease, etiology and pathogenesis, inflammation, fever, and vascular disorders.
In 1872, he created an experimental biological clinic (vivarium) at the department.
Prof. Stepan Dmytrovych Kostiurin, a student of Viktor Pashutin, was the head of the Department of General Pathology from 1886 to 1895.
Under his leadership, teaching was of a pronounced physiological character (he strictly followed the experimental direction in general pathology).
The department's scientific research was devoted to the issues of immunity, pathogenesis of infections (tuberculosis, anthrax, influenza, etc.), pathology of the central nervous system, and uremia.
Prof. Oleksandr Repriov was an outstanding pathologist-pathophysiologist, Head of the Department of General Pathology (since 1922 - Department of Pathological Physiology) of the School of Medicine of the University (since 1921 - Kharkiv Medical Institute), founder of the Kharkiv Scientific School of Pathophysiologists.
He headed the department in 1895-1918 and 1920-1924.
His name is associated with the prosperity of the department and significant improvement of educational and scientific activities.
The professor's works are devoted to the problems of metabolism and endocrinology. His research on metabolism in pregnancy, fever, tumors, the effect of X-ray radiation on metabolism, the dependence of gender hormones on nutrition, the state of the woman's body in the postnatal period and during lactation, fundamental works on metabolism in pathology of the thyroid, parathyroid, pancreatic, gonads, pituitary, and adrenal glands are known.
O.V. Repriov is honored for founding the Department of Microbiology of Kharkiv Medical Institute (1922), the first head of which was his student Damian Grinev.
Prof. Damian Hryniov headed the department in 1918-1920, during the period of temporary work of O.V. Repriov at the Crimean University.
The main scientific problems studied by D. P. Hrynev were the problem of tuberculosis, the role of oral microflora in pathology, the problem of infection and immunity.
Prof. Mykhailo Pavlov is a famous scientist-pathologist, teacher, head of the Department of Pathological Physiology of the Kharkiv Medical Institute in 1921 and 1925-1929. His scientific studies were devoted to a wide range of issues - pathology of endocrine glands, digestion, issues of protein dystrophies, industrial toxicology, pathogenesis of fever, physiology and pathology of cardiovascular system, cytology and hematology.
Prof. Danylo Alpern was a famous pathophysiologist, educator, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Honored Scientist of the USSR, and head of the Department of Pathological Physiology at Kharkiv Medical Institute from 1929 to 1968. He made an invaluable contribution to the development of pathophysiology as an academic discipline. D.O. Alpern's textbook is well known, and many generations of students have studied it. It has gone through 6 editions in Russian, and has been published in Ukrainian, German, English, Bulgarian, Romanian, and Chinese. Danylo Ovsiyovych attached exceptional importance to the scientific growth of students. In 1929, he organized a student circle and a student scientific society at Kharkiv Medical Institute, which he supervised for many years. The main areas of scientific activity: pathophysiology of the nervous system and neurohumoral regulation, pathochemistry of inflammation and pathogenesis of allergic reactions; the role of neurohumoral factors in the pathology of tissue metabolism, inflammation and allergy.
Prof. Relia Lipshyts is a well-known pathophysiologist, teacher, and head of the Department of Pathological Physiology at Kharkiv Medical Institute from 1968 to 1987. For her professionalism, scientific and public services, Lipschitz was recognized by being included in the "International Who's Who of Professional and Business Women's Hall of Fame" of the American Biographical Institute in the following prestigious nominations: "Woman of the Year 2001", "Universal Award of Accomplishment", "The Outstanding Female Executive Award", "International Cultural Diploma of Honor", "The Key Award". She was included in the monumental biographical publication "Great Minds of the 21st Century" and received a medal, and was elected a member of the editorial board of "Professional Women's". The main focus of the department's research was on the pathogenesis of inflammation, pathochemistry of inflammation, and inflammatory mediators. Further development is also being made in the study of physiological mechanisms of allergic reactions.

Prof. Mykola Klymenko is a famous pathophysiologist, Head of the Department of Pathological Physiology of Kharkiv Medical Institute from 1987 to 2011.
The main focus of the department's research was the problems of general pathology of inflammation, in particular cellular and humoral mechanisms of its development, reactions of the blood, immune and nervous systems during inflammation, mechanisms of inflammation under conditions of radiation exposure.
Olga Nikolaieva

Prof. Olha Nikolaieva is a famous pediatrician, pathophysiologist, and Head of the Department of General and Clinical Pathophysiology named after D.O. Alpern from 2011 to 2021.
She was a model of conscientious attitude to her duties, high efficiency, and skillful organization of the main activities of the department.
In 2014, thanks to her persistence, the department was named after D. O. Alpern.
The main areas of scientific research of the department were the problems of general pathology of inflammation, pathophysiology of the digestive, central nervous and reproductive systems, the impact of negative environmental factors on the body.
