Stepan Kostiurin, Doctor of Medicine, Professor, Head of the Department of General Pathology at the School of Medicine of the Imperial Kharkiv University from 1886 to 1895. Professor Kostiurin, who was a student of V.V. Pashutin, became the head of the Department of General Pathology in Kharkiv, having arrived here from the Military Medical Academy when his predecessor I.M. Obolenskyi moved to the Department of Pathology of Organs and Systems and Therapy in 1886. When Kostiurin was the head of the department, the teaching was of a pronounced physiological character, and the department's research was devoted to the issues of immunity, pathogenesis of infection, and uremia. He is also the author of 34 scientific papers.

This is how one of his students described his studies with Kostiurin: "Kostiurin's lectures on general pathology were dull and colorless, although he had a good education at the St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy under Pashutin. It took a lot of effort to make the fascinating field of pathophysiological processes boring. Kostiurin had this ability to the fullest extent. And only Pashutin's good guidance and then Podvysotsky's well-published textbook helped students to some extent master this important discipline of medical education."
In 1887, Professor Kostiurin and Associate Professor Vysokovych were sent to be present during Tsenkovsky's experiments on injecting animals with anthrax poison in the town of Bilozerky, Kherson province.
In the Summer of 1895, the head of the Department of General Pathology at Kharkiv University, Prof. S. D. Kostiurin, moved to the Military Medical Academy, and O.V. Repriov was transferred to take his place. Prior to Repriov's arrival in Kharkiv, the Department of General Pathology at the university had existed for 20 years, but it was even poorer than in Tomsk. However, here, after S.D. Kostiurin, a rich collection of microscopic specimens he had collected remained.
In 1898, Stepan Kostiurin passed away.
